Consolidation of Nicodem Irrigation Canal

The rehabilitation of Nicodem irrigation canal was done in the year 2005 and the implementation was done the Sango village communities in collaboration with the Moshi district irrigation department . The rehabilitation of the canal was not complete due to increased worklosrd resulted from heavy rains while the funds remained the same. There was a need to complete those activities under this consolidation project of Nicodem irrigational canal activities.

Project sustainability

The project will be sustainable based on the training which was provided on operational and maintanace and the training on soil and water conservation activity. Members of the established water users association will pay a fee which will contribute in project sustainability.

Gender Focus

Water from the canal is used for both domestic and agricultural purpose. Thus the project will reduce water related conflicts in irrigation as well as reducing workloard of fetchning water which mostly done by women.

Project Results

(1) Project has contributed in increased crop production and availability of water for irrigation and domestic purpose.

(2) Project has provided training in soil and water conservationthe project has also managed to conduct lining of the 2200meters out of the 2000m proposed in the project plan.The project has also managed to incrrase number of prople trained on soil and water conservation measures fro 38 to90 people.
The project conducted training on leadership as the previous leaders were traditional leaders and they were managing the canal traditional.

(3) Project has created employment in agricultural sector and thus reduce number of un employed who are believed to participate in illegal harvesting of trees in Mt. Kilimanjaro forest.
