Consolidation of activities for the rehabilitation of Makupa Irrigation Project

The cost for rehabilitation of Makupa irrigation canal were estimated to be Tshs. 12,000,000/=. the objective was to rehabilitate 8km of the broken canal. With this funds the lining of the canal was not complete. there was a need for additional funds for lining of 330m long ; construction of 3 culverts; training on soil and water conservation and training in water management and crop marketing.

The projecct provided a positive feedback on the effectiveness of small scale irrigation farming for increased crop production and household income.

Project sustainability

The project has established water users association on which all farmers using the water are memebrs and will be paying 2000Tsh per year which will cover operationand mainatanance of the canal.

The project targetted local communities, which are native of the local area.

Linkages gef projects

This project has a link with Pangani basin conservation project where all irrigation canals has to formulate water users association which will work together with Pangani Basin Authority in conservation of water sources.

Project Results

The project managed to accomplish the rehabilitation of Makupa irrigational canal by lining 300m which were not lined, construct 3 culvates , training on soil and water conservation and management as well as operational and maintanance of the canal.Each family has a plot of average size of 1 hac which will be placed into soils and water conservation practices, thus a toal of 500hac will be conserved.
