Community Based Coral Reef Monitoring - Folkstone Marine Park and Reserve, Barbados
The goal of the project is to establish a mechanism for community participation in the monitoring and management of the only established marine reserve in Barbados. The objectives stated by the grantee are as follows:

(i) To improve information and resource sharing among managers, scientists, communities and youths, for increased participation in decision-making regarding coral reef management.

(ii) To build capacity of youths for advocacy, and incorporate coral reef biodiversity conservation and management into the primary schools curricula

(iii) To strengthen community and stakeholder participation in management planning and monitoring of coral reefs and associated biodiversity; and

(iv) To assist in mobilizing financial resources for conservation and management of coral reefs in the long-term.

The results of the project are expected to be:

? Increased understanding of value of coral reefs and biodiversity in Barbados and the region by Barbadians and visitors alike.

? Increased understanding of, and capacity in Communities and youths for diagnosing and remediation of environmental problems associated with coral reefs and biodiversity

? Better access to and relevant available information

? Informed and empowered stakeholders (communities and youths) for participation in decision-making and coral reef management.

? Increased public participation in coral reef monitoring and management.

? Strengthened institutional arrangements for monitoring and enforcement that will include direct involvement of local communities.

? Improved capacity for management, monitoring and support to the Folkstone Marine Reserve

? Greater creativity in and cooperation among community groups, private sector, NGOs and Government for the conservation of coral reefs in Barbados (Co-management).

? New Partnerships (Public/Private/NGO/communities) and strengthened linkages with local, national, and regional organizations involved in coral reef management

? Improved and sustainable utilization of coral reef resources

? Adoption of project strategy and replication of lessons learnt for regional and global coral reef management and conservation.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
A major component of this project is education and public awareness. The project will complete a stakeholder identification exercise and design and implement programmes which target each stakeholder. Students will be primary beneficiaries of the education programme.
Notable Community Participation
During the planning stage participation was confined to Government stakeholders. Recent studies were referred to and as a result the project seeks to address the serious shortcoming of the lack of community participation in the design and establishment of the reserve. More extensive participation of the surrounding communities is a condition for disbursement of funds.
