Conservation of the Great Apes in Western Tanzania
Conservation of the Great Apes in Western Tanzania
The Jane Gooall Institute (JGI) has been working in Gombe and Mahale National Parks in the study of Apes with specific interest in Chimpanzee. In 2002/2003, UNDP Tanzania through SGP supported JGI with funds to study the reasons leading to the decline in chimpanzees habitat status. The study discovered that the main cause for decline of chimps population to be hunting, disease outbreaks, habitat destruction and degradation brought about by clearing of forests for farming, charcoal burning and settlement establishment. The project main objective is to extend the great apes conservation to unprotected areas, which provides habitation to 60.5% of the existing chimpanzees in Kigoma.
