Poverty reductiong through cultivation of high value crops on small-scale farming under Masaera furrow Irrigation

Masaera village is located in the dry low land area of Mt. Kilimanjaro. This village receives fewer rains and depends on Masaera Irrigation canal to support its agricultural activities. In order to improve famer?s income this project is requesting to conduct rehabilitation of Masaera canal to increase water availability for cultivation of high value crops such as paprika.
The project will organize farmers and train the on paprika production and marketing. This project is expected to contribute in income generation to address poverty which contributes in environmental destruction.

Project Results

The project trained 35 farmers on production and marketing of paprika. The project has also established a demonstration plot for high value crops including paprika. The project also trained farmers in mushroom farming.

The project extended the Masaera canal by 4Km, this extended canal is not lined by cement but it has increased area under irrigation. The project managed to re- construct and lined a portion of the Masaera canal by about 200m

The project could not be completed due to group and political instability in the area.
