Mabira Green Ventures

A community based ecotourism and conservation programme will be established within Mabira Forest Reserve focusing on provision of visitor management by the local communities, and promotion of community conservation education activities to support the protection of forest resources within the reserve, and reduce unsustainable forest use. Implementation will also involve the development of a strong community institution, capable of managing such integrated conservation efforts. Community business will be encouraged through basic training and support, and the potential link between this programme and the COOLRegion programme.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Currently there has been limited community involvement in forest projects, with restricted education and awareness programmes. The implementation of the programme will require the development of a strong community institution, capable of managing such integrated conservation efforts, which remains a current gap in the project area.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Periodic evaluation will be undertaken to asses the status of the project, including development of the local communities understanding and the development of the project management.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project is made sustainable through its links to Mabira Forest Lodge, and a strategic pilot project that will create a sustainable future for Mabira communities (COOLRegion).

Notable Community Participation

The project will be managed by MAFICO and Gyelloba, and will make use of local community members who volunteer to participate in the programme. Financial management will be supervised by Gyelloba to guarantee that funding is fair and efficiently spent within the community. One project manger from Gyelloba will work on this community project, and two members of MAFICO will share a full time project management function. They will be trained in a variety of skills as they work with the Gyelloba manager, mainly through on the job experiences. The volunteers and the selected local community members will be expected to participate in a series of training programmes at the beginning of their work with the programme. The training programmes will provide basics in project management and evaluation, visitor management, development of profitable ecotourism projects, and conservation issues. On the job training will take place in the African Awakening (Mabira forest) lodge.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project will be managed by MAFICO and Gyelloba, and will make use of local community members who volunteer to participate in the programme. The volunteers and the selected local community members will be expected to participate in a series of training programmes at the beginning of their work with the programme.

Policy Impact

This project should set an example of how community education on ecotourism, forestry management, conservation, and sustainability issues can be set up.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Through partners such as Gyelloba and African Awakening, Budongo Forest Community Development Organisation (BUCODO), as well as MAFICO memberships, co-funding is estimated at $ 33,445.
