Project to combat forest fires in areas around on Mt. Kilimanjaro through community participation
The objective of this project is to involve local communities adjacent to Mt. Kilimanjaro in Rombo District to participate in preventing and suppressing forest fires which occur in Mt. Kilimanjaro forest reserve. Repeated incidences of forest fires are the natural forest of Mt. Kilimanjaro has contributed in the loss of biodiversity and nature habitat. Forest fires have increased the number of opportunity species such as Erica in the forest of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The project will create awareness to the communities on the dangers of forest fires, and modern beekeeping activities which use closed fire in honey harvesting.
The project will also create community fire brigades which will be in the front line in fire suppressing in case of incidence of forest fire in the Mountain. These fire brigades will constitute of village environmental committee members.
The project will also participate in tree planting activities of which they have already established a tree nursery.

Local communities will be trained on detecting and suppressing fire outbreaks. Local communities will also be trained on modern bee-keeping since traditional bee-keeping that open fire in honey harvesting which id the main cause of forest fires in Mt. Kilimanjaro.
