Protection of White Stork as a Target Species for Wetlands in Poland
In 1970s ornithologist observations ( eg. in Hungary) brought a dramatic mesage; renovation of houses in rural areas and gradually demolishion friendly for white storks thatched roofs replaced by azbestos roof caused move of white storks to other places where hey construct nests, including pillars of elecricity grid.Young stock often was killed during first attempts to fly killed by electrcity. It had also economic implications - breaks in electricity delivery, repaation costs etc.Combination of these two negative impacts gave the ground for the first POLISH GEF/SGP approved project in July 1994.The pilot project of testing artificially constructed nests (M.Sokolska,R.Polutrenko design) made of wood and initial elements for a good start (branches) and then installed at the top of previous location of original, old nest, of weight oftenly 500-900kg (!).Installation was done during the absence of white storks in Poland (September -January).
Educational component - brochure describing the role of new technology/approach and the multiple role of white stork in the Polish environment, role of its habitats (wetlands), role of small water-basins, good breeding areas for white stork.
Construction of the next 170 nests for white storks with close co-operation with local community and authority, protection of white stork seats (wetlands) in Poland, publication of leaflet about white stork's protection methods
