Magiagi village is located within the town area Apia. The problem within this community is the unnecessary dumping of waste which has affected energy and water source areas based in the village. Half of the village resides above the valley, and most households treat the valley as their dumping ground. Given the proximity of the valley to the reservoir and Fale-o-le-Fe'e, the dumping ground is having an adverse effect on its surrounding environment. Specific problems are;
Watershed areas are being threatened by pollution from rubbish dumping and through organic pollutants
Lack of understanding and awareness of environmental issues especially in relation to conservation and sustainable living
Objectives;
Conducting baseline survey for the community covering socio-economic and gender analysis
Waste Management Programme
Development of substitute products to replace plastic bags
Watershed recovery
Public awareness and educational programmes
***** PROJECT UPDATE: Project currently under execution. There has been a delay in the implementation of activities due to other village obligations. However, the third tranche needs an MOA Amendment.*****
