Protection of Coracias Garrulus on Kurpiowska Plain
Protection of Coracias Garrulus on Kurpiowska Plain
Protection and construction of breeding grounds of corraciacs garrulus with co-operation with local communities and foresters.
The project?s overall goal is to create basis for a program of conservation of endangered Roller (Coracias garrulus). Roller is listed in Poland?s Red Book, being considered one of the most endangered species of birds.Accordingly to at the time Polish legislation, the Rollers? nest should be protected by special zones, reinforcing strict protection during breeding season (?hands off?) within radius of 200m around the nest and allowing some forms of human activities within radius between 200 and 500m around the nest. In spite of its high-concern conservation status, there are no adequate data in Poland concerning Rollers? exact numbers,, distribution and its habitat selection.
Considering this situation as highly alarming, MTOF decided to apply any possible measures to stop and eventually to reverse the Roller?s population trend.
On addition to the high-concern conservation status, the Roller is very well suited for a ?flag species? helping to raise awareness about undesired changes in agriculture landscape effecting the whole group of plants and animals dependent on maintaining traditional farming practices
