Marine Biodiversity Conservation Project - Savaia Village
The Savaia Marine Biodiversity Project is a village based, owned and operated protected area where marine resources are managed in a sustainable manner for the benefit of village people now and in the future. The aim is to sustain the momentum and success of the existing marine reserve by extending its boundaries to accord protection to a wider area of the village marine environment and to reintroduce certain marine species that were once abundant in the area.
1. Improve village capacity - education / training / production of information
2. Project Management - Extension of marine boundary / Rare marine species reintroduction / Sustainable harvesting plan/ Develop IGA / Develop & approve village by-laws pertaining to the reserve / review and update project management plan
3. Research - data collection / marine impact studies / carry-out socio-economic studies on impact of reserve
4. Monitoring - Continue fish monitroing / night patrolling / replace damaged markers / document lessons learnt *****
PROJECT UPDATE: Project complete & needs evaluation of first phase.
Currently proposing for top-up to expand the project to Eco-tourism, Women Development and Marine Reserve Monitoring.*****
