Creation of prerequisites for reforestation of the juniper through implementation of a nursery of Juniper Zeravshansky and other wood-shrubby species, springing up on the territory of Aksu-Zhabagly Natural Reserve with active participation of the local communities
Juniper woods covers the most part of the mountain forests of the southern part of Kazakhstan. Juniper Zeranshansky (Juniper us seravschanica. Kom.), being included into the Red Data Book, can be found only in the mountain range of the South-Kazakhstan and Zhambyl provinces at a height of 900- 2600 meters over the sea level. In-spite of the fact that the juniper woods are of great value, they are exposed to intensive extermination, mainly through conflagrations and felling poaching. Pasture cattle breeding, being widespread in the area and the main income source for the local population, also negatively impact on the juniper woods. Though protecting measures are taken, the juniper woods territory is reducing.
The main task of the project is to create prerequisites necessary for mass reforestation activities in the southern areas of the country in the juniper habitat with participation of the local population through implementation of a nursery of Juniper Zeranshansky and other wood-shrubby species, springing up on the territory of Aksu-Zhabagly Natural Reserve.
The main activities of the projects are
-establishment of hothouse for the juniper growing
-creation of a nursery for growth wood and shrubby species, including juniper,
-realization of information campaign to share experience gained during the project implementation
-training of the local community
The expected results:
1.A nursery of 1,5 in hectares and hothouse of 120 square meters for growing the juniper is created
2.10000 juniper saplings and 40000 juniper seedling are grown to further 50% delivery to the local forestry for afforestation activities, and 50% both selling to the local community, and for reforestation at the local level.
3.35000 seedlings of other wood and shrubby species are grown. 50% are distributed among local community and 50% are sold or used for creation of small nurseries by members of the NGO.
4.A methodical manual is developed for the local community with description of technology of the juniper growing, a video-film is produced and demonstrated.
5.3 seminars for the local community and forestry staff are conducted on the juniper growing technique.
6.Local community actively involved into the project activities
7.Information campaign promoted local community perception to conserve the juniper and establish nurseries to growing the juniper.
8.Local forestry planted 70 hectares (25000 juniper saplings) to restore the burnt territories, local community planted 50000 saplings and seedlings of the woos-shrubby species.
