The Tonkeris-Koksay Ring. Ecotourism development on northeast and southwest vicinities of the Aksu-Zhabagly Reserve with participation of the local communities
Tourism infrastructure is in embryo on the territory of the Western Tien-Shan mountains. There is a probability that this niche will be kept by big tourist commercial companies, and the local population will come to " the broken trough". This means that the local people will not be admitted to reception of the due income out of the natural resources use. Besides there are some threat to the biodiversity of the Western Tien-Shan mountain range, such as strong negative influence from the direction of unorganized tourists and commercial companies, and local community, irregular on environmental routes of the Aksu-Zhabagly Natural Reserve.
The project demonstrates an alternative approach for ecotourism development , when the basic niche belongs to NGOs and local communities. This approach will guarantee public monitoring and regulation of pressure for natural resources. The project is directed on decreasing pressure on biodiversity of the northeast and southeast borders of the Aksu-Zhabagly Natural Reserve through involvement of the local communities of 6 villages and NGOs located closely to the Reserve into development of eco-tourism infrastructure.
The project will include realization of information campaign, training seminars for local people on ecotourism principles and methods of the hotel business development, establishment of new alternative routes, training of the guide-conductors from amongst of the youth of the area. The seasonal tent camping will be organized, guest houses will be opened, parking for unorganized tourists will be equipped, the Ecological Center of Public Monitoring for regulation of recreational pressure will be formed.
As a result of the project environmental situation in the area will improve, nature protection activity of the population, local authorities will strengthen, environmental awareness of the local population will raise, mechanisms for poverty alleviation in the region will be established.
