Pilot Clean and Green Energy Technology and Organic Farming concept towards Empowerment and better livelihoods of Farmers’

Navreet Energy Research and Information (NERI) is a registered society working in the field of eco-friendly energy and optimum utilization of natural resources and its management for up-gradation of livelihoods of rural community in a sustainable way. In conformation to its objectives NERI is implementing a project on Clean and Green Energy Technology and Organic Farming concept towards Empowerment and better livelihoods of Farmers with the Small Grants Program.
The specific objectives of the project are :
? To implement and propagate clean practices of energy, towards irrigation in fields by biomass powered irrigation pumps.
? To promote organic farming, use of bio-pesticides and vermi-composting at rural level, using locally available resources for environmental and economic benefits.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

? A resource centre with adequate facilities such as technical expertise, organizational centre, operational and maintenance services will be established to solve any practical difficulties faced. Each farmer participating in the project will have his own composting pit and arrangement for preparation of bio pesticides. Technology User Group (TUG) of farmers will be constituted to take care of other associated activities

Capacity - Building Component

A technology users group will be formed in the villages and the farmers will be trained in the operations and maintenance of the pump sets. A resource centre will also be set up by the farmers to propagate the technology.

Gender Focus

Both men and women are equally focused in the project and they actively in all the meetings and training programs.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

NERI is implementing a project on Clean and Green Energy Technology and Organic Farming concept towards Empowerment and better livelihoods of Farmers. The project aims to reduce the farmers? dependence on commercial diesel and at the same time lower pollution resulting from its inefficient burning in pumpsets. 10 biomass-powered pumps are proposed to be set up by 10 farmers in 4 villages.

Notable Community Participation

The NGO will form SHG?s and local village committees were the work. They would be involved in selection of the villages for demonstration units. Links shall be established with Banks. All SHGs shall open bank accounts. The committees/beneficiaries shall pay for charges.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project aims at promoting Biomass waste as an ideal fuel and demonstrating its use for running irrigation pumps and use of available biomass, animal and kitchen waste in the form of manure and bio pesticides

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

There are no Particular participation of indigeous people in this project.

Project Results

The project will facilitate and train community members to collect and consolidate biomass available in rural area for vermi composting and for motive power for irrigation. A technology user group (TUG) of farmers will be formed which will be fully trained and equipped to operate and propagate the technology. An appropriate biomass gasifier will be designed and diesel pumpsets/ engines and engines will be converted for running on the gas obtained. This will save fossil fuel and grid power by use of available surplus biomass and reduce carbon dioxide emission by using a carbon-neutral fuel in pump sets. Adoption of organic farming will decrease to use of chemicals and their harmful effects on soil in agriculture sector.
