?Promotion of women?s association for land water resources management in river Palar basin?
In conformation to it?s objectives GUIDE is implementing a project in 20 villages based on the bank of river Palar and its tributary, river Cheyyar, in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu. The objectives of the project are to build the capacity of the local people to develop community based activities on arresting the water depletion; develop awareness and understanding among local communities that water is a common property for all and the use of it should be community regulated. Village level water committees will be formed, which would promote efforts of community involved integrated water resource management and build the capacity of local women so as to have equal space for representation in these committees. A basin level common action for sustainable development practices will be initiated to reduce desertification and increase tree cover. The project aims at promoting Biomass waste as an ideal fuel and demonstrating its use for running irrigation pumps and use of available biomass, animal and kitchen waste in the form of manure and bio pesticides.
The specific projected outputs of the project are:
? Training on social orientation, gender sensitization, management capacity and technical skills inclusive of exposure trips.
? Joint promotion of water conserving vegetation in identified common lands.
? Raising of nursery and promotion of agro forestry.
? Development of education newsletter and posters.
? Documentation and publication based on experience gained under the project.
? Palar basin water federation will emerge for follow up actions.

Major activities required to achieve the project purpose are:
? Training on planning, monitoring and management
? General watershed management orientation.
? Water conservation techniques esp. in agriculture, organic farming, seedlings raisings, live fencing.
? Plantation in common lands and protecting them.
? Perspective orientation on socio cultural realities and gender perspective for men.
? Community level interactive meetings: within village, intra village(cluster level), inter cluster level.
? NGO level networking
? Surveys and publication of the data
? Documentation of experience and dissemination

Gandhian Unit for Integrated Development Education (GUIDE)?s objective is- protection and promotion of human rights, especially poor and vulnerable women and marginalized communities. This is done through awareness generation, and promotion of community action. As right to livelihoods is an important human right, GUIDE promotes community based approaches for environmentally friendly development.
Policy Impact
The NGO has been working with the local governments, but this needs to be seen and addressed holistically and in a continual basis. The Local administration has been supportive to many of activities of the NGO.
