?Community based approaches in mitigation of human crocodile conflicts in India?
The specific objectives of the project are- survey and data compilation at crocodilian conflict areas; develop recommendations and an action plan for each area, including the training of a crocodile rescue team; develop and initiate and education programme with pamphlets, signage; suggest and encourage research on further translocations / reintroductions to pre-empt conflict. The projected outputs are:
? Area specific action plan for avoiding / mitigating crocodile conflict.
? Networking with NGOs / government agencies in implementation of the action plan. Educational materials related to living with crocodiles and information pamphlets / posters would be prepared.
? Identification of research on aspects of crocodile biology pertaining to conflict and identification of workers to carry out the same.
? Adopting a community faced with conflict where a water tank will be constructed away from the water body.
Major activities required to achieve the project purpose: Field visits involving GPS surveys and socio-economic data collection in a format conducive to input into a spatial database, analysis using GIS software, area specific action plans and crocodile rescue team workshop, production of water body at a chosen example confliction location, identify research on crocodile reintroduction relative to pre-empting conflicts

Policy Impact
MCBT has the goal to evaluate the Indian crocodile conservation program, establish a geographical database on crocodile status, distribution, habitat and conflict situations and utilize the database to formulate state level strategies for conservation, education and conflict mitigation.
Notable Community Participation
The applied research would be carried out with the involvement and full cooperation of the village Panchayats in the areas, local communities and NGOs. The existing local NGOs, related scientific institutions, Universities would be involved in the project activities.
