Agroforestry for sustainable land use in Kunene region
The goal of this project is to reduce the rate of soil erosion and gully formation within the Kunene-North Region. Agriculture results in many adverse environmental impacts, including soil degradation. Although degradation comes in several forms; the most prominent in this region is soil erosion by water. Topsoil is washed away, and new landforms are developed into gullies. Part of the failure to halt or reduce the rate of soil degradation has been due to poor understanding of the pattern and processes of soil degradation by the local communities.
The project aims to reduce soil erosion and improve soil cover, by using agronomic measures. Soil management will be improved through reclamation of gully eroded areas and building local capacity in the area of soil management, agroforestry and non-wood forest products. The project will also generate income through production of seedlings for public sale. The envisaged agroforestry system will integrate indigenous fruit trees into the local farming systems, which will increase biodiversity at both the farm scale and in the landscape, improving the stability and sustainability of land use.
The project is located southwest of Opuwo covering Otjerunda, Otjokavare, Ekoto and Omuramba, in Opuwo and Sesfontein constituencies, Kunene Region.
