Awareness raising on pesticides and POPs in Maputo City and Maputo Province
Awareness raising on pesticides and POPs in Maputo City and Maputo Province
This project aims to raise consciousness among peasant groups and pesticide users of various districts of Maputo province, about the malicious pesticides effects, how to prevent contamination, how to correctly use these substances, store and eliminate. Geographically the project will cover peasant groups of the green belt around Maputo, where are produced most of the vegetables, horticultures and herbs that supply Maputo City, as well as other peasant groups, and pesticide users of Manhiça, Xinavane and Magude.

The project will make a social and environmental effort to avoid pesticides contamination of persons and the environment, through pollution effects derived from misuse of pesticides. It will ultimately contribute to the health and livelihoods of the target groups, by reducing their expenses on health services, securing their workforce, and ensuring non contamination of water, soils, and crops. It will become a practical part of the advocacy campaigns on the materialization of the Kyoto protocol, and the Stockholm Convention. It will contribute to awareness rising on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) for a country that is challenging its industrial development, which needs to be adequately managed.
