Community game farming project by establishing a wildlife sanctuary in Mahel Locality
The project aims to establish a wildlife sanctuary of 13,000 ha within a community game farming area of a designated communal land that faces problems of human-animal conflicts and illegal offtake of animals and forest resources in Maputo Province, in northern parts of Magude district, within Mahel Administrative Post. This area is very significant on its wildlife resources (fauna and flora) representative of the Maputaland Centre of Endemism, and of the southern limit of the Miombo ecoregion, that need to be adequately managed as a biodiversity spot.
The project will have focus on environmental education of community members, protection of wildlife within the sanctuary, development of ecotourism activities, and other livelihood support activities for income generation.
