Hlayiswano Ambiente na Cadeia dos Libombos - a biodiversity focal area conservation project, that aims to control harvest of forest resources by establishing three tree nurseries
Impaputo area is facing serious problems of harvesting of its forest resources (leading to biodiversity loss, land degradation and to increase poverty levels), due to individual and private enterprises developments for tourism and agriculture, tree clearing for charcoal and firewood production, extraction of medicinal and ornamental plants, harvest of building stones, and irregular bushfires caused by livestock and farming production. The project aims to control these inadequate land and resource use practices by introducing the components of livelihoods support trough diversified income generation activities, awareness rising on the conservation and sustainable development, and capacity building of community members.
Following those three components, the activities and the implementation strategy will primarily focus on: 1. the establishment of three tree nurseries (for native and exotic trees, fruit trees, medicinal and ornamental trees) runs by community members to multiply and distribute tree species and crops per household and to disseminate new technologies; 2. the publicizing of community rights over natural resources, dissemination of legislation on land tenure, wildlife and environmental conservation, and on local governance (local development commissions will be promoted for the community to be represented within district technical teams, and discussion forums); 3. the training of community members in community organization, innovative technologies, and development of market systems. Also, a pottery for communal production of clay pottery as a source of income generation and an energy farm for production of improved stoves will be established.
The project will be implemented by ADC with assistance from agriculture services and the own community. Three community associations are expected to be established by this project, and also the regularization of the communal land custodianship by requesting land certificates. The project will have 70 direct community members as beneficiaries and will achieve a significant environmental conservation contribution: a platform will be established for community capacity building on communal organization, natural resource management, small-scale enterprise development, and on environmental consciousness.
