Water and Agroforestry Systems: local development in the Upper Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais State
Água e Sistemas Agroflorestais: desenvolvimento local no Alto Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais
The Jequitinhonha Valley is one of the poorest regions in Brazil, with lowest Human Development Indices in the state of Minas Gerais. The region is afflicted by a lack of water and degradation of natural landscapes. This consolidation project seeks to establish a pilot plan for sustainable management of water resources in two communities of Upper Jequitinhonha. Another goal is promotion of better water resource management in the region by means of construction of small dams and terraces for containment of erosion, fencing in spring, environmental education activities and distribution of educational brochures
