Pilot Project for Medicinal Plant, Raw Material and Phytotherapeutical Production in Western Goiás State
Projeto Piloto de Produção de Plantas Medicinais, Insumos e Fitoterápicos do Oeste Goiano
This project is located in Western Goiás, in a region under heavy pressure from agribusiness and expansive cattle ranching. The municipality of Diorama is located in an area of faulty terrain, and therefore still has well-conserved remaining native vegetation, particularly on slopes and valleys.
The objective is to consolidate production and quality control activities for production of medicinal plants, raw materials deriving from them and phytotherapeuticals, all produced by the family farmers association. Supply of natural medication for the local and regional Unified Health Care System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS). 200 thousand people will potentially benefit by receiving prmary health care services. AGROTEC?s Pilot Project for Phytotherapeutical Production has received support from federal government divisions, particularly the Ministry of Environment (Ministério do Meio Ambiente ? MMA) and Ministry of Agrarian Development (Ministério do Desenvolvimento Agrário ? MDA). Substantial contributions have been made to development of a National Policy on Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapeuticals, especially by consolidating a juridical instrument for institutional support labeled Protocol of Intentions for Execution of the Pilot Project for Production of Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapeuticals in the Scope of Family Farming, involving MDA, MMA, Ministry of Health (Ministério da Saúde ? MS), Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz ? FioCruz), the National Agency of Sanitary Vigilance (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária ? ANVISA) and Diorama Municipal Government

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
A regional phytotherapeutical production chain, as well as supply of these products to the Unified Health Care System, are innovations in the scope of Brazil. In spite of myriad bureaucratic difficulties, the project has large potential to demonstrate that local productive arrangements regarding sustainable use of biodiversity resources can be instruments of much interest for local and regional development
Notable Community Participation
All AGROTEC associates (family farmers of local communities) will participate in the project, in addition to a wide discussion involving local and national government
