Weaving Relationships Among Sustainable Conservation and Income Generation Activities in Rural Settlements Tecendo Relações entre Experiências Sustentáveis de Preservação e Geração de Renda em Assentamentos Rurais

this project has as its focus rural settlements in the entire Cerrado region, a global hotspot in which several agrarian reform settlements can be found, most of which are currently threatened by expanding agribusiness. An assessment of experiences in rural settlements and family farming will be carried out in order to construct an empirical framework of preservation and adequate soil use. Specific project objectives include the following: mapping experiences in settlements; build a coordination, to publish systematic information about these successful experiences and build conscience and awareness in farmers regarding a transition from the current production system to one which respects the Cerrado biome and its biodiversity

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

30 members of diffeernt communities received capcity-building regarding sustainable production in the Cerrado. Furthermore, a seminar was held for dissemination of information, involving 80 people from different regions

Policy Influence

Several events were monitored, which included relevant discussions for the future of settlements in the Cerrado, such as the National Technological Matrix Seminar, V Cerrado Peoples? Meeting and Workshop on Forest Program for Agrarian Reform Settlements.

Notable Community Participation

The Brazilian Confederation of Agrarian Reform Cooperatives (Confederação das Cooperativas de Reforma Agrária do Brasil ? CONCRAB) developed this project after holding several meetings in the Southeast, Midwest and Northeast, in which the need for a strategy encompassing all agrarian reform settlements in the country was addressed

Replication of project activities

The training course offered, which covered sustainable production practices for the Cerrado, will be replicated by CONCRAB, an organization which plays an important role in changing the technological matrix in settlements.

Project sustainability

This project made contributions to the amount of infomration available regarding the reality of agrarian reform settlements in the Cerrado, which are likely to serve as the basis for public policy aimed at improved quality of life for settlers, settlement sustainability and Cerrado conservation.

the entire process of collecting experiences and discussing results should involve the government at certain stages and will hopefully contribute to more adequate public policy

Project Results

A survey was carried out in 57 settlements, covering 4,813 families, generating a set of data about the general scope of the reality of Cerrado settlements.
30 young settlers, from several states, were trained in sustainable production in the Cerrado.
Information exposition, public policy and strategies for Cerrado settlements were the topics of the Seminar which 80 participants from 11 states attended.
Learning materials were produced, including ?Cerrado: historical and political context and sustainable coexistence withthe biome ? Agrarian Reform, Agroecology and Permaculture?, for widespread distribution.
