Orkhon - Community Beekeeping
Orkhon - Community Beekeeping
Mongolia practiced bee keeping since 1959 and during the past socialist period over 10,000 colonies were kept as state farms in several places in Darkhan-Selenge region. As the country failed in the transition into a market economy, practically all the state farms were completely self-destroyed. Only a few individual families who worked for the state farms are still struggling retain this practice. But there are many obstacles including financial constraints and difficulties related to worsening natural conditions. The grant is given to an NGO who successfully implemented ?Batsumber ? Community beekeeping project. The project proponent intends to support Northern Mongolia area ecosystem and livelihoods of the Orkhon village. Also, within the project framework, there will be practiced the planting of some honey-bearing plants and will be organized trainings to the local community on beekeeping. Successful implementation of this project will bring a good and rare opportunity for the local community to generate a lot of incomes from beekeeping, while greatly contributing to nature.
