Protection of eagles and other rare species of birds of prey in Poland
The main task of the project is to monitor sites (planned 1190) where the white-tailed eagle, osprey, golden eagle, lesser spotted eagle and greater spotted eagle as well as red and black kites. The project also involves educational activities including disseminating among foresters publications about birds of prey publisghed by the Eagle Committee (Komitet Ochrony Orlow).
The second task on which the Committee has focused its efforts is protection of the sprey, that is construction of artificial nests and strengthening the existing zones of protection,, legal instrument in Poland.
Almost 80 people are directly engaged in the implementation of this project. Every year the Minister of Environment Proetction, Natural Resources and Forestry issues special permits allowing them to enter the protected zones around nests (200m). Additionally a few dozen people cooperate with the Committee and take part in such tasks as conducting surveys, distribution of educational materials etc.
Another task is linked to cooperation with ornithologists from Slovakia and Ukraine. 2 week camp is planned in the Bieszczady Mountain during which observations will be carried out of the lesser spotted eagle and identification of their nests. Further meetings were aiming in creation of well trained group of ornithologists from both countries and KOO for better protection of the lessser spotted eagle. Production of manual for this camp and trainings is planned. From 1993 the Ecofund became the strategic, long-term sponsor for the Committee and their works.
Plans are for preparation of project proposal for GEF/MSP.
