Sustainable Environmental Management and Eco-tourism for conservation in Scund, Socotra Yemen
Scund is the highiest mouunttains on Socottra Located at Latitude +13 87403 and Longtitude +82 5289. The area consists of Nature Sactury and adjacent National park. The area is the main soucre of water for Socotra where heavy vegetation catch cloudes and produce permenantt water sources for down stream users. The community at Scun is semi nomadic pastroralist settling at trhe national park in seven different villages, 10.5 km from the water course and the siite overloooking most of the Socottra tterritory and the spaced out Indian Ocean.
The project aimed at assisting communities to acquire fresh water from a renewable source for drinking and for irrigating 29 gardens managed by women in their areas. In addition the project will asist community in the setting up of an eco-lodge for recieving eco-tourists in the area. Both water and tourism are supposed to support community managing their protected area and national park. Above all the project will empower men and women sustaining the use and conservation of natural resources for improving communities' livelihood in the years to come . The community, women and the NGO members participants of the project will recieve an intensive training for capacity building in gardnening (on site), conservation, tourists at the ecolodge management (on mainland Yemen). This is to ensure sufficient capacity in managing resources that include revolving fund for project impacts and conservation work sustainability.
