Chereche Irrigation Dam Catchment Area Conservation Project

The project aims at conducting environmental conservation awareness and environmental planning training to stakeholders (Village Government, WDC, Primary School, Farmers Groups, Charcoal makers, sand miners, Tarime District Council).

The project will also conserve the environment of the catchment area of Chereche Irrigation dam in Nyathorogo ward. The project will also improve agricultural practices, restore vegetative cover and improve land and water conservation measures. The project will target 8,000 people in Nyathorogo ward in Tarime District in Mara Region. The Rorya Farmers Group will work very close to TAHEA to restore the degrading dam.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1. The project emphasizes on afforestation, tree planting and conservation of Chereche dam catchment area. These are measures to address land degradation and deforestation.

Notable Community Participation

1.Communityand other stakeholders participated in the project formulation and will participate in its implemetation , monitoring and evaluation.

Capacity - Building Component

1.The project intends to train famers group, community leaders on management and natural resources conservation laws and by laws. 2. The project will train about 20 farmers on the use of rice husks for brick burning, this reduces deforestation. These will build their capacities as far as environmetal conservation is concerned.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

1.The project will contribute to sustainable livelihoods since in the long run people will be harvesting wood fuel from their homesteads, unlike beofre where they had to buy or deforest. Planting of trees 2. Rehabilitation of Chereche Irrgiation dam will contribute towards improved harvests as they will use the water to irrigate their farms hence have to plant different crops almost year round , this will increase income to the farmers.
