Reduction of women workload through sustainable water supply , sanitary environment and afforestation

(1) The project main objective is to improve social economic status of the population through environmental remedial measures linked with a reduction in Women's workload.

(2) It will also enable at least 60% of the adult community members to refrain from practices that degrade the environment through awareness creation to WDCs (50) village members (400) field volunteers and 40 fire fighters.

(3) It will also reduce firewood consumption rate by construction of 150 low fuel wood consuming stoves and promote tree planting by establishing 4 tree nurseires and 8 woodlots of 400,000 trees.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

1. Community members will participate in the project.

Notable Community Participation

1. Community will participate in the project throughout its cycle. Community leaders will be involved also in the implementationof environmetal protection activities. 2. Tree planting will be promoted among the community members.

Gender Focus

1. Culturally women are involved in environmental sanitation, this project will contribute towards reduction in women workload by promoting environmetal sanitation. 2. With planting of trees will contribute to availability of wood fuel in the long run, it will also reduce women workload of searching for wood fuel. 3. The use of low fuel (firewood) consuming stoves will reduce indoor pollution to women and children who were used to smokefull cooking environment.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

1.Planting of trees will lead to income generation through the sale of seedlings. 2.Low fuel consuming stoves will contribute to saving of household income which can in turn be used for other economic activities. 3. Rice production will contribute both to food security as well as income generation.

Capacity - Building Component

1.Trainings will be conducted to environmental field volunteers and fire fighters this will impart knowledge to the trainees who will effect environmental conservation in the project area. 2. Community mobilization sessions will build the capacities of the community members on the whole issue of environmental conservation and sanitation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

1.Use of low fuel consuming stoves (fuel efficient stoves) contribute to reduction in deforestation as less fuel will be needed.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project willsignificantly contribute towards improved livelihood whereby:- 1. There will be improved sanitation hence reduction in preventable diseases. 2.Reduction in amount of fuelwood consumed in cooking will save families from high purchases of the item hence reduced costs. This leads to saving of their income. 3. Availability of clean water in schools( from rainwater harvesting) will improve students/pupils sanitation as they will drink clean water, unlike before availability of such water.
