Sustainable land Managment for the protection of Qadheb Village from flood, Socotra, Yemen
Qadheb village located at N 12 63410 E 53 94980, under the Raiged watershed. It has 3011 people in 309 families live in 232 hiouses. The village suffer from heavy flood in 1998 and 2004 when many houses were washed out. This is as a result of heavy earosion and deposition of earth materials elevates Wadi bed and divert flood path towards the village. Local community in the village abundon their home due to fear from flood. Poverty is prevauiling since people only fishermen and herders fish only 6 months per year, hence are unable to shift and build their houses away from the area.
The project was based on baseline hydrological study determines the size and types of measures to reduce land degarrdation and safeguard the village. An engnineer prepared the required maps indicating section and indicate inttervention on the map. The project agreed upon by community at the village through participatory discussion. Measures include building of basins for sedimentation contrao, Wadi bank protection by building flood barriers supported by Gabions from inner side, Cleaning of deposited materials, create awareness among community on destructive activities e. g. Tree and stone cuttting and over grazing at the watershed above village. The community contribution to the project cost is 27.4% scoring the higghest percentage in the country portfolio. In order to ensure proper implementattion of project activities a local engineer hydrologist supervion and institutional support from SCDP on Socotra.
