LEGAL SUPPORT & LAW & POLICY REFORM IN SUPPORT OF BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION IN ORO & WESTERN PROVINCES IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA
The proponent will provide legal assistance to customary resource owners, NGOs, CBOs and and other community groups.

The activities will include legal and ecological awareness workshops, para-legal trainings and monitoring and evaluation of the project. The project will conduct research and develop news letters and pamplets translated in both the Tok Pidgin and English languages for distribution as part of the capacity building components for the local people. The activities are focused to educate the local people to make informed decisions on large scale operations like logging and mining in their areas.

These project sites have been identified in the report "Conservation Needs Assessment" 2), by the government, as "biodiversity hot spots "areas due to the diverse composition of flora and fauna and lowland tropical rainforests yet to be uncovered and recorded. These project sites are potential for large scale logging and mining activities.

The project is currently under implementation.

The progress report of the first disbursement is pending.
