OGAYO INTEGRATED CONSERVATION & DEVELOPMENT PROJECT TO ESTABLISH A CONSERVATION AREA & TO SUPPORT ECO ENTERPRISE ACTIVITIES LIKE BUTTERFLY FARMING, PRESERVATION OF TRADITIONAL CLAY POTS ETC. BY WOMEN AND YOUTHS IN KOREAF VILLAGE.

The proponent will assist the CBO to develop a conservation area within the Ogayo project area. The current threat is the potential of large scale logging and mining operations north of the project area.

The other activities include the preservation of clay pots, tapa cloth making and awareness programs that will promote conservation of the lush and lowland tropical rainforests in the area. The project committee anticipate to replicate this project to other nearby villages.

The NGO will also conduct legal trainings and workshop as part of its capacity building component. The project is anticipated to cover the whole Wanigela and Tufi areas of the Oro porvince.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The CBO and the people of Ogayo anticipate to be advocates to promote public awareness of global environment if project is successful and achieves its objectives.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The local people have contributed the forest and the resources that sustain their livelihood to be conserved to protect the environment and biodiversity in it as part of their committment to the project. The community supports the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The local people with the assistance of the local NGO hope to esatblish a conservation area at the project site and then venture into eco forestry and integrated conservation and devlopment activities to earn some cash to maintain their livelihood.

Notable Community Participation

The people of the Ogayo tribe agreed that their forests and hunting grounds will be gazetted as a conservation area. The local people developed the concept with the local CBO to establish a WMA and enter into eco forestry projects. The community was involved in the initial stages of the project plan, design and development.

Gender Focus

The project encourages participation of both male and female of youth age groups, older people and the Ogayo community at the initial stage.

Project Results

The project anticipates to establish a conservation area at the project site to protect the biodiversity and the lush lowland tropical rainforest. The other component is the eco enterprise, in which women and youth are encouraged to make clay pots, manage the harvest of barks for tapa cloths and other products to generate income for households as well as purchase sewing machines and other equipment to engage the women and youth and the rest of the people in the Ogayo area in other spin off benefits.
