The project which addresses poverty alleviation through capacity building by development of skills in recycling of solid waste and at the same time mitigating an existing national environmental problem. The solid waste would be converted into handicrafts and tourist souvenir items, some of the items would be inspired from the local Rivulet Terre- Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary (Ramsar site), in line with other projects being currently developed for Roche Bois. This would thus address the climate change focal area of the GEF, by decreasing the quantity of waste going to the landfill and thus amount of greenhouse gases, while at the same time concurring in the government?s plan of rehabilitating the waste dumping site in Roche Bois.
