The impact of Tsunami disaster in 2004 was worst felt in teh Ampara district . the highest death toll was recorded in this area an d the damage to house and property equally cartastophic. the main objective of the project is to plant a narrow strip of beach located on the Ampara/Batticaloa border with vegitation akin to the coastal forest of the area and also to establish 25 demonstration forest gardens in Kalmunai.

select 25 candidates from the area whose gardens are a minimum of 5 acres in extent. establish 25 demonstration models in alternative agriculture. these will serve as the learning ground for the other farmers in the area.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
the landscape in farmer's gradens be designed in a manner that is similar in architectural structure and ecological funciion of the natural forest of the area but where a wide array of utility species of crops are planted toprovide food,timber, medicine, fibre, fodder,and fuelwood etc.Both,by converting thier meager home graddens into forest gardens, a farme can increase his income and decrease the risk from growing only one or two crops. ensures food security, increase the fertility of the soil. improve the quality of water in the well whilst recreating habitat for biodiversity.
