Widespread Organization for Urban Environment
The project is about introduction of solid waste management in Kozyatagi Neighborhood in cooperation with Kadikoy Municipality in Istanbul. Kozyatagi is a settlement with 65 streets where 40,000 people live.

OBJECTIVES
To start a solid waste management system in Kadikoy Kozyatagi in cooperation with the Municipality.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
? A questionnaire on ?types and quantity of wastes in household? distributed to all buildings together with a project brochure.
? Answers to questionnaires assessed
? 2 volunteers per street selected for each of the 65 street together with the headperson of the neighborhoods.
? Volunteer trainers are trained on ?solid wastes?, ?separation?, ?wise use?, ?organization? etc.
? Posters, brochures on ?participation and civil society? and ?waste management? were published and widely distributed within the Municipality.
? Training materials (such as notes, dia positives, brochures, posters, logos) are prepared and made available for volunteer trainers.
? Volunteer trainers executed trainings in houses within their areas (streets).
MAIN ACTORS
? Society of the Peace with Nature is the coordinator of the project. The society was established in 1993 and working on voluntary basis, mainly concerned on the issues of pollution, solid waste, and safe transit though Bosporus strait.
? The partner of the project, Kadikoy Municipality is one of the biggest Municipalities in Turkey.
? Volunteers and households in Kozyatagi Neighborhood were the main actors.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project consisted of public awareness activities targeted towards building managers, houseviwes, children and doormen particularly in solid waste recycling and reuse. The project as well as training these two target groups, also facilitated community-based planning and ensuring public participation in decision-making and resource mobilisation at the local level.
