The destructions caused by the recent Tsunami in the above mentioned areas have been significant and the greatest harm has been experienced in the areas where the coral reef has been destroyed. The salinity level of the soil has gone up and the lagoons have been badly affected. In the areas where the mangrove cultivation has been the impact is minimal. As mentioned above, the area considered under this project has had major environmental problems in the past yet the recent tidal waves have aggravated the situation adding some long term difficulties. People have recognized the impact of environmental degradation with this experience and this can be considered as the most strategic opportunity to get the community involved in environmental protection programmes. Therefore, at each level of the project, the communites which live in the areas of the relevant issues identified, will be the main partisans or the beneficiaries and this participation will run through a cross section of the society where children, youth and elderly will actively participate.

The environmental resource center will help to get information on different aspects of local as well as global environment. Here, components such as bio diversity, wild life, environment problems, and environmental conservation will be included, locally as well as globally. The printing of posters and brochures will also create awareness on different aspects of environment.

The sustainability of the project to be realized is targeted by identifying the process, which makes direct impact on peoples lives, and by making the community the beneficiaries and the owners of the change. At the organization level it is expected to promote the facilities of the resources center and eco tourism and the income generated is expected to support the future activities.

The women in this area are very adept at coir fiber yarn production, but they are still in the practice of using the traditional method of retting husks in the pits by the riverbanks. No study has been done or any attempt made in introducing technology for a better method of making pits minimizing the impact on the environment itself or of the impact of the environment on the community (specially the women). So this project will mainly focus on coir producing women in the area.
