Use of the Natural Resources in Forest Habitats of European Importance in Antaliepte
There are about 250 ha of natural forests near Antaliepte village, in the Sventoji river valley. Tree fellings are carried out there. Although the trees felling rules are applied they do not ensure protection of biological diversity of forests, and additional environment protection measures need to be taken. However the attitude of the majority of local people and institutions to environment protection restrictions was negative, community members, lack information about the natural values of their living environment; they are not involved into handling of environmental problems.
The project aimed to preserve biodiversity of forests and at the same time to provide environment-friendly business possibilities for the Antaliepte community.
The grantees made the agreements with private forest owners and state forest enterprises that they will follow scientific recommendations and will apply nature management activities plan prepared during the project,. The plan will focus on the sustainable management of the biodiversity and protection of woodpecker species. At the same time it is planned that a group of local young people will be trained on the woodcrafts and special information center and training workshop will be installed. A lot of environmental education activities will also take place during the project (voluntary help in forest management works, seminars, publishing of information materials, nature education path and field-class, summer camp for children).
