Local Scenes for Environment Protection
Target Population / Location of project: 600 community members from 150 households in 14 tambols of Samutsongkhram province about 864 ha, 80 % earning living by agricultural practice and depending upon the provision of three adjacent ecosystems: Don Hoi Lot Wetland ? a wetland of international importance no. 1099 , Mae Klong River and the Gulf of Thailand. The location is an integrated ecosystems of the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea, in which two macro-GEF projects were currently operational (UNDP-GEF and UNEP-GEF). The target population are endeavoring to reverse the degradation trends caused by unregulated development and urbanization.
Objectives:
1. To collectively and participatory identify innovations leading to tackling prevalent local environmental problems of the ecosystems of the Mae Klong River and Don Hoi Lot Wetland
2. To forge networks of Alongside-A-Canal residents, within Samutsongkhram and adjacent Provinces
demonstrate local approaches in environmentally-friendly transaction
Activities to be taken:
1. Organizing 20 unique open forums through selected appropriate media with experience sharing and discussion amongst various target population on environmental issues, environment governance , indigenous knowledge and natural resources
2. Organizing monthly meeting to plan periodical small activities
3. Conducting study tours to Learning Centres for Canal Livelihood
4. Mapping resources, culture and local approach and correlation of resources in canals and rivers
5. Establishing one model spa shop providing service to public
Anticipated Output and indicators:
1. Emergence of six youth networks protecting forest along canals
2. Acquired resources inventories of each participating areas
3. Acquired local types of mass media as sets of mechanism to raise conservation awareness
4. About seven-kilometer long of canal being under watch with periodical water quality monitoring
5. Acquired participatory working processes among youth and parental group, with learning and modification, to be used in conducting area survey
6. Emergence of correlation maps and action plans of each participating area, about 80% perfection
7. The spa shop being a model for other small entrepreneurs in reducing nutrients amount into canal and river
