Conservation of Native Rice Species
Conservation of Native Rice Species
Target Population/Location of project:
37 paddy-farming families residing in Tambol Thung, Chaiya District, Surathani Province, a lowland and wetland in Malay Peninsular of Sudaic Sub-region of the Biogeography and an integrated ecology of the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea. The project aims to revive the use of native species of paddy, encourage its consumption and reduce chemical cultivation.

Objectives:
1. Educate target population on rice species conservation through breeding and propagation
2. Promote paddy-farming techniques that reduce or avoid chemical application

Planned activities:
1. Three learning forums on rice species conservation
2. One study tour
3. Demonstration of rice breeding and propagation techniques
4. Production of solid and liquid compost
5. Establishment of a Congregating population preferring consuming native species
6. Production and dissemination of learning media

Anticipated outputs:
1. Increased capacity of target population, as indicated by ability to implement conservation techniques
2. Establishment of five to ten plots as learning models
3. Conservation and sustainable use of at least eight native rice species
4. Conversion of at least 25 paddy farms to native paddy species
5. Increased interest in consuming native paddy species
6. Reduced field burning
