Filter Pits for Sustainable Environment Development and Learning
Target Population/Location of project:
250 community members from 50 households, the majority of which belong to the 'Mon' ethnic minority group. Inhabitants reside along the Chaophaya River at Bangprog Community, Muang District, Pathumthani Province. The Chaophaya River is an integrated ecosystem of the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea, in which two macro-GEF projects are operational (UNDP-GEF and UNEP-GEF). Community members aim to carry out a household-scale approach to reducing nutrients draining into the river.
Objectives:
1. Help address transboundary concerns re: the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea
2. Instill an environmental conservation ethic amongst community members
3. Scale-up project activities to surrounding communities
Planned activities:
1. Build capacity in project location and surrounding communities by holding a seminar on waste water management
2. Construct 30 filter pits used to trap nutrients and other pollutants
3. Conduct study tours to environmentally-successful communities
4. Hold meetings and/or seminars with the remaining 87 households to gain insights about the project activities and results
Anticipated outputs:
1. Increased capacity of target population, as shown by construction of 30 functional filter pits and
2. Treatment of 6,000 litres/day of waste water prior to drainage into Chaophaya River
3. Establishment of community as good model for waste water treatment at a household-scale
4. Adoption of approach (and pit construction) in 45 additional households
