Revival of Farming Livelihood
Revival of Farming Livelihood
Target Population/Location of project:
30 paddy-farming families in a floodplain of the lower Nan River. The project area spans five tambons in Phijit and Phitsanuloke provinces, and is part of an integrated ecosystem of the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea. Chemical-intensive paddy farming has led to a decrease in land productivity, an increase in pests, an ever-dwindling number of water species, and community indebtedness. To combat these issues, the community aims to amend both environmental and livelihood practices.

Objectives:
1. Promote and scale up sustainable agricultural practices
2. Conserve water species

Planned activities:
1. Build project members? capacity through collective planning and study tours
2. Establish a learning center
3. Reforest native species for community consumption
4. Demonstrate a no-burn, chemical-free process for farming and producing wood vinegar
5. Demarcate one conservation zone

Anticipated outputs:
1. Thirty families practice self-sufficient farming in the project location
2. Reforestation of at least 160 ha with native species suitable for local consumption
3. Creation of 50 plots demonstrating no-burn, chemical-free agriculture; use of 80 ha in a sustainable way
4. Creation of five demonstration locations for wood vinegar production
5. Annual production of 50 tons of organic compost
6. Recognition of conservation zone as a model for neighboring communities
