Sustainable Collective Protection of Lower Thachin River
Target Population/Location of project:
500 members of 288 villages and 18 community schools situated alongside an 82-km stretch of lower Tha Chin River notorious for being the most polluted in the country. Untreated industrial waste, chemical run-off from cultivated land, and community waste regularly drain into the Tha Chin. Given that the river is crucial for project members? livelihood activities and food security, the project aims to launch a community-based attack on these threats.
Objectives:
1. Reverse the degradation of the Tha Chin River
2. Forge a strong network to pilot, sustain and scale-up local environmental activities
Planned activities:
1. Demonstration of?
? Organic fertilizer production for participating schools, community members, and TAO;
? A four-acre environmentally-friendly orchard
2. Launch of waste management campaigns and capacity-building activities for project members, particularly youth groups
Anticipated outputs:
1. Half of project members are able to produce organic fertilizer
2. Rotating fund worth THB 100,000 is established from the sales of fruit, and used for long-term environmental actions
3. Water quality database is compiled as a result of monitoring conducted once every two months at eight stations
4. Six major canals are under continuous protection
5. Student environmental network is forged amongst eight schools
6. At least 10 garbage banks emerge in participating communities and schools
