Conservation of the Genetic Make-Up of the Barbados Blackebelly Sheep

This project will help the grantee to identify ten poor and marginalised farmers (50% men and 50% women) to assist in a project which promotes the conservation of the Barbados Blackbelly Sheep an indigenous species to Barbados. The grant will help to cover the cost of workshops and seminars, general research into existing conditions of the potential project participants, selection of project participants, and preparation of the full grant proposal. During the planning process the grantee will also establish contact with the University of the West Indies on genetic fingerprinting.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

It is expected that the Planning Grant phase will assess the capacity needs of the sheep farmers that will participate in the full project in an effort to address those needs during the implementation of the full project.

Gender Focus

Project participants are expected to be 50% men and 50% women.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The Planning Grant phase will also lay the foundation for a marketing and sales process for the Blackbelly during the project implementation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

This is also expected to be a component of the full project when designed.

Notable Community Participation

This is essential for a successful project, especially in relation to local sheep farmers and will form part of the planning process.

Project Results

The grantee successfully organised and conducted 1 seminar over the project period. The objectives of the seminar were as follows:

 to make the local sheep farmers aware of the project and what it involved;

 to lobby farmers participation and support for the project; and

 to educate farmers of research in the area of the genetics of the Barbados Blackbelly Sheep, highlight the major diseases, aspects of good nutrition and general farm management practices.

Presentations were made from key personnel in the sheep sector including, representatives form the Barbados Sheep Farmers Incorporated, Pinnacle Feeds Ltd (a local feed manufacturer), a local veterinarian and lecture from the University of the West Indies currently conducting research into the genetics of the local Blackbelly Sheep. Feedback from the farmers attending the seminar was encouraging and a number of them were keen on participating in the project.

The research component of the project took the form a survey which was used to collect basic socioeconomic information on the Blackbelly Sheep farmers of Barbados. This information provided an insight into existing conditions of the Blackbelly Sheep farmers.

Several informal meeting were held with various sheep farmers and were used to gain feedback and share ideas which were incorporated into the final design of the full grant project proposal.

Finally the project resulted in the development of a full project proposal which was approved for funding by the Barbados National Focal Group (NFG) February 18th 2008.
