Amagyembere Iwacu Community Camp for Conservation and Development
The overall goal of the project is to improve the conservation of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (MGNP). MGNP is part of the Virunga Volcanoes that are an important habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas and for biodiversity conservation in general. They also provide crucial environmental services to the growing populations of surrounding human communities whose activities are posing a threat to the park's resources.
The project is to address this threats by supporting Mgahinga Community Development Organization to upgrade and manage their tourist camp known as Amagyembere Iwacu Community Camp that is located at the entrance to MGNP as a business venture to provide services to tourists and invest the proceeds in community development activities. The project support will go towards physical infrastructure improvement and capacity development of the implementing NGO and local communities top better manage the investment. specific activities will include: assessment of infrastructure improvement needed; construction work; maintenance of structures; training in housekeeping, catering and hospitality; and strengthening community structures and institutional development.
