Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

Direct community participation, benefit and ownership of project activities and outputs are some of the in-built project sustainability mechanisms that will be further fortified by the financial support from UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme. It is intended that part of the proceeds from the sale of fresh mangoes at maturity of the orchards will finance project activities for a very long time and will mark the beginning and continuity of financial stability of FTFG

Notable Community Participation

Direct community participation, benefit and ownership of project activities and outputs are some of the in-built project sustainability mechanisms that will be further fortified by the support solicited. An assumption associated with the project is that the existing high demand of export quality mangoes will continue through the project duration. This will sustain increased farmers incomes, interest and participation in the project.

Gender Focus

Fruits and Tubers Farmers Group (FTFG) is a registered community based organization (CBO) has 53 registered and fully paid up farmer members comprising 23 women, 16 youths and 14 men. The CBO takes full participation of all gender.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Presently most residents in the project area (Minani parish) are typical peasants deriving their entire livelihoods from small over-cultivated and low yielding land parcels. The daily budget for most households is about Ushs 600 or the equivalent of about 30 US cents per day. The agricultural landscape is virtually devoid of indigenous vegetation including trees and shrubs leaving the soil surface exposed and prone to sheet and gully erosion. Almost all the trees have been cut to make charcoal which is sold to supplement the very meager incomes derived from sale of surplus subsistence agricultural output. The purpose of the purpose of this project is to optimize livelihood options of subsistence farmers through creation of productive self-employment. The objectives of the organization are to increase and diversify agricultural production and marketing in order to improve food security and generate household incomes from sale of surplus output as an alternative basis of livelihood.

Project Results

? Expansion of land cover under sustainable care as mango orchards with a further 100 acres of grafted mango orchards established with a projected commercial yield of approximately 680 tons of fresh mangoes per annum at maturity
? The mango orchards will for years be committed and managed specifically for production of fresh mangoes and this implies that carbon dioxide will be continuously fixed and soil continuously stabilized for a very long time
? Optimization of livelihood options of subsistence farmers through creation of productive self-employment
? Increase and diversification of agricultural production and marketing in order to improve food security and generate household incomes from sale of surplus output
? The ingenious cooperative land consolidation strategy has enabled the farmers to overcome the economic encumbrances associated with land fragmentation and small holder subsistence agricultural production
? The increased acreage and yield of high quality grafted mangoes has optimized local and export marketing opportunities and will result into increased regular cash incomes for the farmers
