Archa (Savin) is juniper widespread in Central Asia. It grows in extreme conditions - on the dry stony slopes, opened to winds and sun in a climate with temperatures from rather cold up to hot. The average savin life expectancy is between 500 and 2000 years. The savin woods play a very important role in strengthening slopes and preventing erosion, and regulation of water drains. Savin is also one of the medicinal plants in this region.

Destruction of the woods leads to shallowing of the mountain rivers, occurrence of mudflows. For the last years tiers of the savin woods has been destroyed, and the surviving ones have much suffered from antropogenious pressure. Now they are presented by the rarefied plantings, natural renewal goes slowly there. The numerous ecological reasons like dryness of climate in combination with very slow growth of trees, and a number of socio-economic factors, such as cut down the wood for firewood and excessive cattle pasture have led to reduction of the savin plantations.

Rendering sanitary on human constitution, the savin woods can become a place for active development of recreational activity. It would promote employment of local population, which is now mainly jobless and poor.

The purpose of the project is propagation of complex use of natural resources of the area, conservation, restoration and the further improvement the situation with the savin plantings through carrying out of informational campaign and attraction of local population to the problem solution.
