To protect Buras village out of sandy storms and drifts (Development and implementation of a complex of measures to combat to land degradation in Beskaragay area of the Eastern Kazakhstan)
One of the basic problems of Buras village is land degradation , which is caused by frequent fires in the pine forests, illegal deforestation, disappearance of natural green barrier strengthening the ground and detaining sand, lack of understanding among local people about the influence of deforestation on their livelihood, irrational cattle grazing round the village.
The project is directed on protection of Buras village out of sandy storms and drifts by means of creation of phyto-meliorative barrier, creation of a system to maintain the spring in a good condition, realization of information campaign among rural population, development of the cattle grazing system with the purpose to preserve the planted saplings.
As consequence frequent dry sandy and dusty winds have appeared, the level of subsoil waters has decreased, the lakes round the village has dried up, the ground becomes unsuitable to agriculture. If no urgent rehabilitating measures been taken to solve the problem, desertification processes could become irreversible.
One of the measures that could be taken to stop sandy storms is creation of the greenbelt barrier in the southwest part of the most suffered from deforestation territory. And another step that is going to be implemented within the project is clearing of springs round the lake near to the village, as they dries up because of pulling sand.
The expected results are
-Phyto-meliorative greenbelt for 5 hectares will be created to protect the village out of sandy storms
-On the territory of the phyto-meliorative barrier near to the drying up lake the springs will be cleaned off;
-local community, schoolchildren, municipal services, agricultural committee, local authorities will be actively involved into the project implementation
-local community? s awareness about the issue will raised
-cattle grazing in alternative pastures will be arranged to conserve the greenbelt
