Ecological Aquaculture for Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Food Production in Antigua and Barbuda
Ecological Aquaculture for Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Food Production in Antigua and Barbuda
This demonstration project is based in the Freetown community in Antigua and targets fishers and the urban poor including women and young people. The project will establish a production facility where aquaculture and aquaponics will be undertaken producing organic fish and vegetables (lettuce; tomatoes; and plants) for the market. The business plan produced shows a net positive income by Year 1 because of the high demand. The project is also designed in such a way that it will train other community groups and or persons willing to establish small aquaculture/aquaponics businesses of their own. The goal of the project is to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable practices to benefit the marine ecology and agriculture in Antigua and Barbuda.

By the end of the project the following outputs are expected:

(i) organic fish and vegetables sold regularly on the local market;
(ii) over 25 women and young adults trained in aquaculture and agroponics;
(iii) less pressure on the inshore fisheries;
(iv) a more sensitized population on organic aquaculture;
(v) a more knowledgeable population on the impacts of overfishing in the environment;
(vi) more examples of private and public sector partnerships; and
(vii) a research programme established which provides more information on aquaculture and agroponics.
