Environmental Stewardship and Green Space Development: Student Driven Demonstration Project at P.N. Campus, Pokhara
Environmental Stewardship and Green Space Development: Student Driven Demonstration Project at P.N. Campus, Pokhara
Free Student Union of Prithvi Narayan Campus, despite its strong political ideology, are committed in enhancing environmental stewardship by developing green space within the campus premises. The 35 ha barren land at the bank of the marvelous Seti river is the ideal site for public access park development. At present approximately 15,000 students study at this campus coming from almost all hill districts of western Nepal. Pokhara valley, on the other hand, is facing tremendous growth pressure and the municipality has not been able to maintain open space for public use nor do they have any plans to do so. This project has dual objectives to fulfill: one is to engage college students and faculty members to develop Campus owned land as an open green space and Public Access Park and other to develop the park as Biodiversity and Renewable Energy info-demo education center for the students and general public. The project managed by students, is the first of its kind where student can not only learn but can also earn by managing the park.
