Community Based Natural Resources Management for Sustainable Development in the Middle Hills of Nepal
Community Based Natural Resources Management for Sustainable Development in the Middle Hills of Nepal
The rugged mountain slopes of Hamsapur VDC in Kaski, West Nepal, represent two of the major forest ecosystems consisting of lower subtropical Sal forest and temperate Schima-Castanopsis forest. The streams such as the Paste, Katle and Kurlung flowing through these mountains forming river valley and its own niche of freshwater ecosystem, is also the home for some threatened aquatic animal like Asala (...) fish. The interspersion of these ecosystems provides ample opportunity for various medicinal plants and agrodiversity to grow, shelter for wild lives, watershed for famous Rupa Lake . The project will also serve two community forests with an area of 141 ha. which is managed by 140HH users consisting the higher percentage of underprivileged indigenous communities. Unmanaged natural resources, deforestation and loss of farm land through landslides, erosions and excessive use of fertilizer that causes land degradation are major problems in this area. The main objective of the project is to empower the local through capacity building in conservation and protection of natural resources mainly involving the youth in the village, facilitating the income generation utilizing natural resource, promoting agro- biodiversity, NTFP, eco-tourism and demonstrating an integrated development strategy to neighboring Mid hill region .
