During the project period nearly eight thousand plants belonging to fifty four species were planted in home gardens, in the lagoon and around public wells in the area. The efficacy of the experiment in bioremediation is assessed by periodically investigating the levels of the contaminants in the water. Out of the 64 wells selected for the wells six had high concentrations of nitrates more than the recommended level. The highest nitrate level was 113mg/L. Nitrite concentration was high in 16 wells than the recommended level. The highest was recorded as 1.51mg/L. The Regional Laboratory of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Sri Lanka tested the water samples before starting the project. The results of the water samples after the bioremediation revealed that the level of nitrates has dropped dramatically to a level so that the water is potable. Land management practices changed to organic agriculture including the use of crop varieties in the landscape design of twenty five home gardens.

Initially 25 families were selected as benificiaries the and 9 wre de selected and the rest wre sought to restore their drinking water wells located in thier home gardens. the monthly meetings were also sought to keep the beneficiaries abreast of research carried out by the NWSDB.

The community was consulted throghuot the project from the inception of teh project where the first meeting would identify teh needs, constraints and modus operandi of the project 24 community meetings were held during the project period to assess the progress and evaluate the project. The final meeting was held with the community to decide on the inclusion of their drinking water wells in future projects.

The project has built capacity within its staff, the beneficiaries, local government and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board by creating awareness of the problem and the means to rectify it. The base of bioremediation involves the restoration of vegetation into a garden landscape around the drinking water wells which is low cost, located in the beneficiary lands and will endure for as long as the beneficiaries do not cut down the planted trees. The type of restoration will, in addition to cleaning the well water, provide an income, food, medicine, fuel wood and a host of other benefits. It will also increase the habitat for biodiversity. The fact that the Local Government authorities request an extension of the work to other areas in the peninsula is a singular sign of success in terms of its replicability. Further the method is now endorsed by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and will thus be replicated wherever the problem of nitrate/nitrite contamination occurs in Sri Lanka
